HIRING A ROOFER IN GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI
How to Hire a Roofer in Gulfport, MS
Gulfport puts its roofing rules in writing. Every re-roof needs a permit posted where it can be seen from the street, shingles must meet a high-wind rating for 160 mph design winds, and roofers need a City of Gulfport contractor license. Here is how to use those rules to vet a contractor.

Look for the Permit Card. Then Compare the Price.
WHO CAN ROOF IN GULFPORT
Gulfport Licenses Roofers Itself.
Gulfport issues its own contractor license, with Roofing as a listed category. Applicants need a Mississippi State Board of Contractors license, liability insurance of at least $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 aggregate naming the City of Gulfport as certificate holder, and a business privilege license from their home jurisdiction.
A contractor who arrived from out of town after a storm may not have done any of that. Ask for the city license and the certificate of insurance, and check the state license at msboc.us.
A ROOF IS A SYSTEM
The shingle is only the part you see.
Decking. Underlayment. Fasteners. Flashing. Roof edges. Valleys. Penetrations. Intake and exhaust ventilation. Starter. Ridge cap. Installation details.
We don’t just choose a shingle. We design the roofing system around the home.
BEFORE YOU COMPARE GULFPORT ROOFERS
Three Gulfport Checks Before Price Comes Up.
Gulfport publishes roofing guidelines that many cities leave to the inspector. Use them. A proposal that does not match them is a proposal that will not pass.
01
State & City Licensing
Know who is legally responsible
Verify the MSBOC license at msboc.us or 800-880-6161, then ask for the City of Gulfport contractor license. The city waives its $100 license fee for state license holders, so a qualified roofer has little reason not to have it.

Permit Card & Inspections
Posted and visible before work begins
Gulfport requires a permit for every re-roof and for repairs over one square (100 square feet). The permit card must be visible from the street, any decking repair needs a nailing inspection, and every roof gets a final inspection.

Scope Written to Gulfport's Guidelines
160 mph, Class H, no overlays
The city's guidelines call for ASTM D7158 Class H shingles with at least six nails each, metal drip edge at all roof edges, decking nailed 4 inches on edges and 6 in the field, and a single layer of roofing. Overlays are not allowed.

ROOFING SYSTEM DESIGN
Gulfport Writes Its Roof Rules Down.
The city's roof permit application includes a notarized affidavit that deck nailing and the roof system will comply with the 2018 IRC. Compare each proposal against those requirements before you compare the totals.
If one proposal is cheaper, check whether it still meets Gulfport's guidelines, including replacing deteriorated decking.
WHAT GULFPORT ROOFS HAVE BEEN THROUGH
The Whole City Is a High-Wind Area.
Gulfport's roofing guidelines say it directly: the entire city is a high-wind area, and residential neighborhoods are designed for 160 mph three-second gusts. The storm record shows why.
Zeta's Strongest Wind Was Measured Here
The National Hurricane Center's Zeta report says the strongest sustained wind it received came from Gulfport: 74 knots, with an 88-knot gust, on the night of Oct. 28, 2020. It called the damage in Harrison County the most extreme.
Katrina Next Door
During Katrina, Long Beach, Gulfport's neighbor to the west, recorded a 25.7-foot surge and an unofficial 106-knot gust. The Gulfport airport instrument failed after reporting gusts of at least 55 knots.
Flooding Comes From Creeks, Too
The city names the Biloxi River, Turkey Creek and Flat Branch as flood sources, along with pocket flooding from poor drainage. Building Code Services provides free flood-zone determinations at 228-868-5790.
The 50% Rule
If repairs or improvements reach 50% of a building's market value, Gulfport requires the home to be elevated at least one foot above base flood elevation. Homes built before September 11, 1970 are classed as pre-FIRM under the city's flood rules.

Gulfport inspectors look at the deck and the finished roof. Armor looks underneath too, because the attic shows moisture, ventilation problems and decking damage that a curbside look never will.
In Gulfport, a new roof should meet the city's written guidelines, not just pass a glance from the curb.
WIND POOL & FORTIFIED
Ask What the Roof Needs to Earn FORTIFIED.
Harrison County, including Gulfport, is inside the Mississippi wind pool's coastal area. Strengthen Mississippi Homes offers grants of up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED Roof, but in 2026 it is open only to homeowners insured by the wind pool for three consecutive years. A statewide rollout is expected in early 2027.
For coastal counties, the program also requires that the home be in a jurisdiction that enforces a qualifying building code, and the contractor must be program-authorized. Armor is a certified FORTIFIED Roofing Contractor and can explain what the standard adds beyond Gulfport's guidelines.
WHY IT BELONGS IN THE CONVERSATION
Replacement gives us access to the parts that matter most.
A roof is a system.
Details matter.
Preparation matters.
What happens underneath the shingles matters.
Your best defense starts long before the storm is in the forecast.

THE ARMOR INSPECTION
Read the Proposal Like a Construction Document.
A roofing proposal should tell you what is being built, not simply what it costs. Look for the tear-off scope, underlayment and water protection, shingle system, flashing, ventilation, penetrations, decking terms, cleanup, warranties, exclusions, and payment schedule.
The roof speaks. The attic tells the truth.
If a major part of the system is missing or vague, ask before signing. Gulfport inspectors check the installation against the shingle bundle wrapper, so the proposal should name the exact product.

REAL WORK. REAL HOMES. REAL DETAILS.
See the Work Behind the Finished Roof.
A finished-roof photo only tells part of the story. Armor project case studies are built to show what we found, why we recommended the work, the roofing system and materials selected, installation details, and the finished result.
Until Gulf Coast projects are completed, selected work from Armor's Michigan operation will be shown clearly as established company experience. We will not manufacture local projects just to fill a page.
GULFPORT ROOFING QUESTIONS
Gulfport Questions, Answered.
Short answers drawn from the City of Gulfport's roof permit application, roofing guidelines and contractor license requirements.
Do I Need a Permit to Replace My Roof in Gulfport?
Yes. Gulfport requires a permit for all re-roofing and for any repair over one square (100 square feet). The permit must be issued and the card posted, visible from the street, before work begins.
Can a Roofer Put New Shingles Over My Old Roof in Gulfport?
No. Gulfport's roofing guidelines allow only one layer of roofing and prohibit overlays, so the old roof comes off. Deteriorated decking must be replaced, and decking is nailed 4 inches on the edges and 6 in the field.
What Shingles Does Gulfport Require?
Asphalt shingles must be rated ASTM D7158 Class H, shown on the bundle wrapper, and installed with at least six nails per shingle according to the manufacturer's instructions. Residential areas are designed for 160 mph winds.
What License Does a Roofer Need in Gulfport?
A Mississippi State Board of Contractors license and a City of Gulfport contractor license, with liability insurance of at least $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 aggregate naming the city, and a business privilege license.
Better questions lead to better roofing decisions.
ROOF REPLACEMENT ACROSS GULFPORT
Gulfport Homes Span More Than a Century.
Gulfport has four National Register historic districts listed in 2016, homes built before the city's 1970 flood maps, and creek-side areas the city names as flood sources. Each one changes what the roofing scope should cover.
01
Central Gulfport & Second Street
Historic Homes From 1887 On
The Central Gulfport district covers about 37 blocks with buildings dating from 1887, and Second Street holds 71 houses built from 1900 to 1960. Gulfport's Architectural Review Committee reviews changes in designated districts, so check with Planning at 228-868-5710 before changing materials.
02
Southwest Gulfport & Gulf Gardens
Early and Mid-Century Rooflines
Southwest Gulfport's homes date from 1893 to 1966, and Gulf Gardens, platted in 1925 around Park Boulevard, has 114 houses from 1926 to 1966. Older framing and decking deserve a close look before the scope is priced.
03
Turkey Creek
Creek Flooding & Attic Moisture
The Turkey Creek community was founded in 1866 by emancipated African Americans, and the creek is one of the flood sources the city names. Moisture and ventilation belong in the inspection, not just the shingles.
04
Pre-1970 Homes Citywide
Pre-FIRM Rules Can Apply
Homes built before September 11, 1970 are pre-FIRM under Gulfport's flood rules. If storm repairs and improvements reach 50% of market value, elevation requirements follow, so you should see the whole picture before work starts.
